Wellness In The Schools Updates

Parents WITS would like to welcome you back to a new school year.  We have lots of great new ideas for the year, as well as continuing our exciting work from last year.

Next week starts our first WITS labs.  Chef Katie Cook is back to teach the kids all the healthy ways we can bring apples into our diet!

Also we have won a grant for a new garden tower this year that will be in the Atrium.  Students will learn how to plant and grow their own food.

Dear WITS Parents/Guardians, Welcome back to school!

As you may know, Wellness in the Schools (WITS) is at your school this year, working closely with you, the students, and the school staff and administration to achieve a healthful culture. WITS offers three main programs:

Cook for Kids

In partnership with local Departments of Education, WITS operates the Cook for Kids program

in public school cafeterias and classrooms to promote healthy eating and combat childhood

obesity. WITS chefs teach children and their families how to cook healthy, delicious, and

affordable recipes featuring whole, unprocessed foods through our WITS Labs and WITS BITS,

series of seasonal cooking and nutrition classes.

Coach for Kids

WITS Coach for Kids program brings trained coaches onto public school recess yards to

encourage even the least active children to engage in fun and healthy physical activities. Coach

for Kids actively combats schoolyard bullying by building positive social skills through play and

fosters a sense of excitement around fitness.

Green for Kids

WITS Green for Kids combines edible gardening with environmental education in a way that is

interactive and accessible for all students and schools. Utilizing mobile, hydroponic “Tower

Gardens” as our vehicle, WITS brings the school garden experience into classrooms and

cafeterias for hands-on learning.

Very often we photograph or videotape our work to showcase our work to Board of Directors and current/potential donors. We also use the photos and video footage to promote WITS through Twitter, Facebook, and our website. In order for WITS to use the photos and videos, we are asking you to please complete and sign the Minor Model Release Form on the reverse side of this document.

Thank you very much for your support, and we look forward to a productive year together.
