Magnet School Status

West Prep is a special type of school. Being a district 3 magnet school means having a specific theme. Our schools theme is "Youth Voice Through Youth Media". This theme is woven through everything we do at the school. From class projects to elective courses to technology equipment, West Prep ensures that all students have access to their unique voice and the latest 21st century tools of learning and expression.

Our magnet school's special curriculum was designed by our teachers to stimulate and excite our student's minds. Students here create meaningful and explorative projects that re-quire inquiry, critical-thinking, and reflection.

West Prep Academy was selected to join to the I-Zone 360 cohort after a competitive process that eliminated all but 25 schools for this distinguished honor among New York City Department of Education Public Schools.

With a focus on personalized learning for each student, we hope to continue our growing trend of academic achievement for all. As an I-Zone school West prep will be focusing on student-led parent-teacher conferences, and the creation of digital portfolios.

Expanded Learning Time

West Prep is proud to be chosen as a Citizen School and participate in the expanded learning time model. The purpose of the expanded school day is meant to provide students with additional supports to academic instruction and enriching extracurricular activities. Every day, students will have time for Academic League subject instruction and supervised homework time. Additionally, students will participate in college and career explorations as well as enjoy enrichment such as sports, arts, and music. Students have opportunities to explore different careers through weekly apprenticeships alongside experts from the field. Some examples of past apprenticeships include web and video design, photography, advertising, computer animation, and many more.

Reelworks has been a partner of West Prep for several years. They work closely with teachers and students to weave documentary film making into our classes. Work with Reelworks has ranged from short historical biography documentaries, to public service announcements, to film classes.

Reel Works provides a free filmmaking program continuum for NYC teens. Using a unique one-on-one mentoring model, we challenge at-risk youth to tell their stories and have their voices heard. In turn, they build vital skills of literacy, leadership and self-confidence to create productive futures.

The Lamp

At West Prep we believe that part of becoming a member of 21st century society is being able to synthesize information from the media. The LAMP is a non-profit organization that works with our multimedia classes and builds projects for students to help them become more media literate.

Media literacy is knowledge about your mediated environment. This includes media messages you receive or produce, and technology you use every day for work, school, information, entertainment and personal relationships. To be media literate is to be critical and empowered in a world saturated with media.

World Savvy

World Savvy has worked with West Prep to help us create projects and a curriculum that give our kids opportunities to develop and express their voice around global issues.

World Savvy prepares the next generation of leaders to learn, work and thrive as responsible global citizens in the 21st century. We support systemic change in K-12 education to provide every student in every classroom with the content knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to be leaders and change makers in their diverse communities, locally and globally.

"How do I know who I am and what I believe, until I've been given the opportunity to say it."

West Prep Academy encourages their Middle School student-scholars in grades 6-8 to understand the power of their voice and their capacity to speak out and to make changes in their community and the larger world around them while harnessing the power of youth media.

By integrating this theme of "Youth Voice Through Youth Media" into the curriculum, we are able to stimulate and excite our students. Through meaningful, explorative projects that require inquiry, collaboration and reflection, West Prep strives to develop students who will problem solve, collaborate, think critically, and become socially responsible members of the community.
